Watch: 'It’s going to pay off one day,' Frances Tiafoe brings out the real reason he became one of the 'best players in the world' in candid conversation with Nick Kyrgios

America’s Frances Tiafoe , who is currently participating in the ATP Houston tournament, appeared in a chat show hosted by Australia’s Nick Kyrgios . In that show, the 26-year-old recounted his struggling days.

When Kyrgios asked the American how he ended up being one of the best players in the world, the latter narrated a scene from his childhood where his father used to work as a maintenance worker. Tiafoe said his father, Frances Sr., encouraged him and his twin brother to take up the sport.

You know, my dad being a maintenance worker at a club, gave me a chance for me and my twin brother to be around tennis. We're sitting in the golf cart while he's sweeping the clay courts. It's going to pay off one day. Frances Tiafoe said in Episode 6 of Good Trouble

Notably, Tiafoe’s father became an on-site custodian in Maryland after he worked as a laborer to construct the Junior Tennis Champions Center. As he was given the spare office, he lived with his two sons for five days a week. During that time, Tiafoe and his brother started training at the court under the tutelage of Misha Kouznetsov.

Frances Tiafoe is the youngest American to win an ATP title but the road to success was not easy

Frances Tiafoe reached his career-high rankings last year in June when he became a No.10 player. After turning pro in 2015, the 26-year-old won his first ATP title in the 2018 Delray Beach Open. This made him the youngest American to win a title in the ATP circuit since Andy Roddick in 2002.

But the road to becoming one of the best players in the world did not come without doubts. During that episode of Good Trouble with Nick Kyrgios, Tiafoe recalled how people used to jeer at him and his brother because they chose tennis as a career.

People are laughing at us, "Oh this guy thinks he can be a pro." Or you know, "This guy's playing with holes in his shoes". I wanted to go one step further and take care of my family. That sentence right there changed my life. Frances Tiafoe said

Tiafoe will start his campaign at the ATP Houston on Wednesday (April 2). He also participated in Men’s Doubles matches alongside Michael Mmoh in the same tournament. But the pair of Anirudh Chandrasekar and Vijay Sundar Prashanth defeated the Americans in the Round of 16 by a scoreline of 6-3,6-4.
